Scenic Roads

The preservation of the quality of the visual and historical environment has become increasingly important to the American public. The highway has become the important link between 89a-vermillion_Cliffsthe public and their enjoyment of these resources. Americans rely on their vehicles to transport them to these places of unique beauty and cultural significance.

In 1982 the State of Arizona responded to this preservation movement by enacting into law ARS 41-512 through ARS 41-518. This law provides for the establishment of Parkways, Historic, and Scenic Roads. The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) is the agency responsible to implement these laws. In 1991, the federal government passed the Intermodal Surface Transportation Efficiency Act of 1991, which created the National Scenic Byways Program. The Program provided for the establishment of All-American Roads and National Scenic Byways.

This purpose of this website is fourfold:

1. Assist the applicant in preparing the application for the designation of Parkways, Historic and Scenic Roads, and nomination documentation for designation of National Scenic Byways and All-American Roads.

2. Provide guidance in preparing Corridor Management Plans.

3.Assist the applicant in acquiring grant assistance in the planning and implementation of scenic byways.

4. Provide the motoring public the current inventory of the scenic byways in this state.
