State Route 87 (Duthie-Martin Highway) is a vital route for Valley residents traveling north to Payson and other Rim Country towns and recreation spots. In May 2011, ADOT completed an important roadway improvement and erosion-control project on a stretch of this highway about halfway between metro-Phoenix and Payson -- and fulfilled its commitment to finish the work before the Memorial Day Weekend and busy summer travel season.
The project, officially known as the SR 87 New Four Peaks Road to Dos S Ranch Road Reconstruction and Erosion Control Project, began in September 2010 with the goal of improving safety and easing the commute between the Valley and Rim Country communities. Work involved repairing slopes and ditches, reinforcing embankments and implementing modifications to meet state and federal standards between Mileposts 204 and 210, approximately five miles north of the Saguaro Lake turnoff and 15 miles north of Shea Boulevard in Fountain Hills.
Read our press release to announce completion of this project and find out why it was so important for motorists and neighboring communities. Watch a short video about this project.
SR 87 improvements were funded through a combination of a half-cent Maricopa County sales tax under the voter-approved Regional Transportation Plan and the 2009 Federal American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) funding.
ADOT thanks you for your patience and cooperation while this important work was under way!

The project is anticipated to begin in early September, 2010 and is expected to be completed by July 2011.
The following project will require traffic restrictions on SR 87. Northbound SR 87 will be used as a two-way detour during construction on the southbound lanes. Daytime and nighttime construction activities are expected. Motorists may experience slowing and traffic delays, including temporary closures. ADOT will provide regular project updates via this website and email. If you wish to receive regular updates via email, please contact the Public Involvement & Partnering Outreach Team at valleyfreeways@azdot.gov.
