Construction for improvements to I-10 west of Tonopah begins Tuesday
Motorists traveling between Phoenix and Quartzsite should expect minor delays

An 11-mile stretch of Interstate 10 west of Tonopah will be repaved to create a smoother ride for drivers, beginning Tuesday (Oct. 18), according to the Arizona Department of Transportation. Motorists traveling between Phoenix and Quartzsite should plan ahead and expect minor delays from mileposts 52 to 63 due to intermittent single lane closures.

Work will be completed in segments between 6 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. weekdays.

What to expect during work hours:

  • One lane will be closed while crews remove and replace pavement along segments of I-10.
  • The speed limit will be reduced to 45 mph in the construction zone during work hours.
  • Law enforcement will be on-site to monitor speeds.
  • Message boards will advise drivers of lane restrictions.
The $6.7 million project also includes guardrail improvements, replacing existing pavement markings and other miscellaneous work. The project is scheduled to be completed by April 2012.

ADOT advises drivers to proceed through the work zone with caution, slow down and be alert for construction equipment and personnel.

ADOT works to inform the public about planned highway restrictions, but there is a possibility that unscheduled closures or restrictions may occur. Weather can also affect a project schedule.
